Mr. Amantangelo, department head

Congratulations

The Canadian and World Studies Department is happy to announce that Mr. Amatangelo’s Grade 9 student, Kuwabong Angtvogmwini, placed 20th out of 876 students in the National Park Canada Poster Contest. Her poster will appear on the National Park’s Website.

Specialist High Skills Major

Our department continues to strive towards success for all students by offering a new high skills major in Social Justice and Leadership which will start this coming September. It will focus on preparing students for their careers by offering students a Co-op component that will allow for hands-on, real world experience in the field.

Around the School

We would like to thank Mr. Giovanangeli for his contribution to the co-instructional environment of the school. His senior boy’s basketball team won a silver metal at OFSAA, which is the 1st time in 37 years our Knights have received a metal.

Our teachers this term have had the privilege of having Anna Olson from the Food Network show Sugar as a guest speaker. Anna Olson has spent a few years as a banker before pursuing her culinary dreams by attending Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Vail, Colorado. Anna, as a successful chief with a hit television show and award-winning cookbooks, shared her insights on entrepreneurship with our staff, which some teachers have incorporated, and continue to incorporate where they can.

The Holocaust Symposium

This semester’s history students will be attending the Holocaust Symposium. Where they will have the opportunity to hear a keynote speaker, as well as interact with a Holocaust survivor in a small group setting. This direct exposure to the need for tolerance and compassion seems especially invaluable as world leaders struggle with peacekeeping endeavors around the globe.

World Food Fair.

The Family Studies students participated in their annual World Food Fair. The students prepared a variety of different cuisines from around the world. These creations were put on display in the forum.

The teachers within the Canada and World Studies department continue to demonstrate their enthusiasm by their creative teaching strategies and their involvement in co-instructional activities.
