Day of Silent Solidarity

October 22, 2009

St. Thomas More’s Culture of Life group hosted its first annual Day of Silent Solidarity on Thursday October 22, 2009. STM students joined other students from across North America for a day in solidarity. The St. Thomas More community proudly supported the event with over three quarters of our staff and students dawning red armbands that said ‘LIFE.’ Students also distributed fliers explaining why they were silent and educating their peers and others about the more than 100,000 babies that are aborted in Canada each year. Students who participated were asked to be silent the last fifteen minutes of class and on their lunch for taking a stand and being a bold witness for life. This is a day for pro-life students to honour those children, as they stay silent as an act of solidarity with these innocent victims. The event was a powerful testament to widespread pro-life attitude among teens and young adults.
The mission of our group is to promote a pro-life culture within our school and encourage our students to Live the Life message found in the Gospels. Our initiatives at St. Thomas More will focus on educating our students about the beginning and end of life issues, in particular those associated with abortion and euthanasia. This year we plan to continue fundraising for St. Martin’s Manor, home for unwed mothers, visit the elderly in local Nursing Homes, attend conferences, host a second annual Pasta Dinner, and end off with our annual trek to Ottawa for the March for Life.
