Diane Baulch, B.Sc., R.S.W.
Jane Acheson, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Are you tired of hearing - "You just don't understand me." - "Why would I want to talk to you, you'll just tell me that I'm wrong." As parents, how we communicate with our teens will greatly affect how they communicated back to us. During this session, we will be sharing with you "five" strategies that will promote healthy communication with your teen. The desire to be understood is not just a teen issue, but rather it is present in every person!

4. Disordered Eating: When to Worry

Cheryl Webb, M.S.W., R.S.W.

The presenter will discuss the spectrum of normal to disordered eating. Focus will be on common indications that a child or teenager has shifted from disordered eating to an eating disorder. What to watch for and how to intervene in an effective manner will be discussed. Case examples will draw on parental participation. Time alloted for informal and formal discussion of parental concerns.

5. Children of Character: Teach them values, strengthen their spirit, and promote success!

Teresa Hartnett, Program Director, Office for Family Ministry

Our children and youth do not develop their characteristics or their moral strength (or lack of) in isolation. They are influenced by everyone and everything that crosses the paths of their lives. They will form their values based on what they see, hear and experience. Their moral character and spiritual center needs a role model and mentor; how will you fill that role?

6. Giving Effective Praise and Encouragement

Laura Laverty, Public Health Nurse

Explore the importance and benefits of effective praise and encouragement for children. Research has shown that banking positive feelings and experiences with your child builds a lasting relationship that can be helpful during times of conflict.
